ARTIST CALL
CONTACT
Mother-Tongue is a curatorial project centered around safe and free dialogues. It is a jargon and judgment-free space for artists to share their work and for an audience to respond. We want to create a space where people can form opinions, share interests, and have a productive conversation about art, politics, societal dilemmas, and all of their intersections.
The project consists of guided table talks, where an artist will present their work and process. Guests will have a conversation with these artists and be able to discuss topics relevant to today’s world and try to figure out how contemporary art fits into these paradigms.
MANIFESTO
1. FREE THE ARTIST
An artist’s job is to share their point of view on society, yet with institutional and buyer pressures, artists have started conforming to ideas that are not authentic to them.
2. BRING BACK
CRITICAL AUDIENCES
We no longer have a Secondary Audience in art spaces; it is reserved for collectors and powerful institutions. This leads communities to be secluded from the power of contemporary art.
3. NUANCE IS KEY TO DEVELOPMENT
To be able to change the direction the world is going, we need to be able to listen to different opinions and learn from multiple perspectives.
“Education as a counter-cultural experience is endangered,” - Mark Dion
4. INTELLECTUALITY BELONGS TO EVERYONE
Many people feel intimidated in art spaces or in academic conversations, but they should not. Everyone can bring their own experiences to the table. Judgement doesn’t belong in intellectual conversations, because that is the moment the conversation becomes unproductive.
